As an independent organising committee we needed a service provider to help us realise an automotive engineering conference. RCIS 2020 was held at a time that the effects of \r\nthe COVID pandemic were relatively fresh and as a result\r\nnot many conferences around the globe as well as in Cyprus\r\nhad been organised as virtual events. There was therefore\r\nthe challenge to organise the event in a satisfactory way,\r\nboth from the scientific point of view as well as in a way\r\nthat it would be pleasant for the participants, somewhat\r\ntaking away the unavoidable disappointment of not being able\r\nto participate physically. This challenge was met most satisfactorily.\r\nAll the sessions were well organised, the presenters were\r\nable to deliver their speeches without any issues and there\r\nwas a very smooth and enjoyable interaction between the\r\nparticipants. Any technical issues (but mostly queries by the\r\npresenters regarding the use of the presentation platforms)\r\nwere addressed quickly and efficiently. Overall, the organisation\r\nwas excellent and the participants\u2019 very positive feedback a\r\ntestimony to this,\r\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>

As a member of the Scientific Programme Committee I was very involved in the planning and construction of the AEA-Europe \u2018Festival\u2019 in November of last year.\r\n\r\nInitially, I had my concerns about the Festival given that it was going to be a significantly distilled version of the usual conference experience. In the final analysis, the programme was full, interesting and helped to maintain a degree of continuity and momentum (the alternative was to cancel the conference altogether). My fear of technology failing was completely eradicated as the event unfolded.\r\n\r\nHaving attended most of the Festival sessions I came away thinking, rather surprisingly, that I had actually attended a \u2018real\u2019 conference (albeit in an unfamiliar way).\r\n\r\nReflecting on the Festival and other, similar events I\u2019ve attended since, I can now say that I am far more favourably disposed to virtual conferences than I had originally envisaged.\r\n\r\nNo travelling, no waiting, no queues. No hotel registrations. No conference dinners. No coffee breaks. All good stuff!\r\n\r\nI have to say that virtual conferencing is definitely the way forward!<\/p><\/div><\/div>
